Group Work on Communicable Disease Outbreak Case Studies

Teaching Strategy Description:

Working in small groups, students are provided case studies related to communicable disease outbreaks.  They are directed to several resources to assist them to answer questions relating to communicable diseases, case finding, outbreak response, and individual, family, community, and population health (see Resources). Guided by Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956) of thinking and reasoning, questions begin at a lower level focusing on simple recall and comprehension before moving to complex skills requiring cognitive reasoning, analysis and synthesis of knowledge, and critical thinking skills.

Teaching Context:

• Third year course in Collaborative Undergraduate program

And the first  term at the University of Victoria: NURS 350- Health and Healing: Promoting Community and Societal Health;

• Classroom setting of 40 students
