Effects of Culture & Geography on Health in Remote Communities

Teaching Strategy Description:

Students travel to different rural and remote northern Aboriginal communities, including one week of immersion in a remote community, giving students the opportunity to learn about the influence of culture and geography on health.  There are in-class learning activities on cultural competence, cultural safety, health status indicators, etc., to prepare them for their placement.  Students apply knowledge about many concepts, including cultural competence and safety during their placements.

Teaching Context:

  • The Laurentian University Collaboration’s Northern Rural and/or Remote Nursing Experience – National
  • BScN students must be enrolled in or have successfully completed third year community health nursing courses
  • Students gain 100 clinical hours
